RUGBY 2011 BRINGS BENEFITS TO OREWA
AND THE HIBISCUS COAST

Orewa and the Hibiscus Coast are expected to experience significant economic benefits from hosting Rugby World Cup teams in 2011.

Projections prepared by Howarth ATL for the Auckland Regional Rugby World Cup Planning Group estimate that 66,000 visitors are expected to come to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup and stay a total of 1.3 million days in the country, generating huge economic benefits for New Zealand.

During the World Cup, The Hibiscus Coast will play host to three teams: Samoa (from 26 – 30 September), Namibia (from 20 – 22 September) and the winner of the Asia One pool, which is likely to be Japan, from 3 – 13 September 2011.

Teams will use the Silverdale Rugby club as their training ground, and stay at the Gulf Harbour Lodge and have access to the facilities at the world class Gulf Harbour Country Club.

Teams may also choose to use The Leisure Centre in Stanmore Bay as a training facility.  The proposed Northern Arena complex at Silverdale is scheduled for completion at end 2010 and the teams may also use this as a training venue.

The Japanese team is expected to attract the fourth highest number of supporters to New Zealand of all the teams in the competition.  4,500 Japanese visitors are predicted to come to New Zealand during the tournament and stay a total of 92,000 days in the country. 

The most recent Tourism New Zealand figures indicate that Japanese tourists spend on average $764 per person per day while in New Zealand. Based on these statistics, 4,500 visitors, staying an average of 20.5 days each (as per Howarth ATL estimates) would generate $70.5 million for the New Zealand economy. The Japanese team will be spending 44% of their stay in Rodney District, so the local economy is likely to attract a significant share of this spending.

Japan will be staying in Rodney for 11 days prior to their first match on 10 September at North Harbour Stadium when the team will take on France. 2,060 international spectators are expected to attend this match. Given that approximately twice as many Japanese fans are expected to visit New Zealand as French fans, it could be estimated that up to 1,380 Japanese fans may attend this game. Many of these fans could choose to stay in Rodney in the vicinity of their team.

The Samoan team is expected to attract around 200 supporters who will stay a total of 4,700 days in the country.  Namibia is expected to attract a similar number of rugby supporters with 200 visitors expected in the country to support their team, staying for 4,500 days in total.

48 matches will be played during the Rugby World Cup tournament, 13 of which will be played in Auckland. Three matches will be played at North Harbour Stadium, only 15 minutes from the Hibiscus Coast.
